Arco Romano
About
The Roman Arch of Medinaceli, locally known as the Arco Romano, is a striking triumphal arch that stands in the historic town of Medinaceli in the province of Soria, Spain. Erected in the late first century AD, the stone arch showcases the austere yet elegant opus quadratum technique and bears the Latin inscriptions commemorating emperors Augustus, Domitian, and Trajan. Perched on a hill overlooking the Jalón valley, the arch commands panoramic views of the surrounding highlands and has survived centuries of weathering, with its northern and western faces better preserved. As a protected Bien de Interés Cultural monument, visitors can stroll past the arch’s single central passage, designed for carriages and pedestrians, and appreciate the fine sculptural elements such as pilasters and cornices that embody Roman architectural finesse.
