Yacimiento Arquelogico De Numancia
About
Yacimiento Arquelógico De Numancia is one of the most extensively excavated Celtiberian sites in Spain. Located atop the dramatic hill of La Muela in Garray, the ruins offer sweeping views of the surrounding plains and the Duero River. Two distinct urban layers are visible: a pre‑Roman Celtiberian settlement and a later Roman town built upon its foundations. Visitors can walk through reconstructed streets, study the remnants of the Roman public building, explore the small Roman baths, and admire the northern gate. The site has become a powerful symbol of the struggle for freedom, as stories of the ancient defenders are woven into the national narrative. Guided tours explain both the military aspects of the siege by General Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus and the everyday life of the inhabitants. Today, Numancia provides an informative museum experience, offering visitors tangible insights into Celtiberian culture, Roman influence, and the evolution of urban life in the Iberian Peninsula.
