EL PLATA, Iberian Cabaret “What do you mean by Iberian?” our artistic director, Bigas Luna, was once asked. “It’s a story made of passion, of love, of pain and broken hearts, of a buxom girl, of Spanish tortilla with onions, tomatoes, cured ham, a lot of olive oil, a lot of cheek, olives, onions, garlic, animals, a lot of animals, gin and tonics and paellas.” El Plata has reinvented cabaret with those same ingredients. The result is a most surprising mix. Full of imagination, of hilarious parodies, of explosively erotic performances coupled with much fantasy, harking back to the appeal variety shows in their heyday, of disco music, of boys, of risque numbers, of traditional Spanish dances in the raw, of gypsy glamour and dime store fashion, of imitations of folk song and dance, of acrobatics and Las Vegas showgirls. Not to forget: the wine jars, the paellas, the garlic, the cured ham…
