About

Stortorget, meaning "The Main Square" in Swedish, is the historic heart of Malmö. Dating back to the late 16th century, the square was created after the demolition of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit and has since been the city’s primary public gathering place. The square is dominated by Malmö Town Hall, the largest town hall in the Nordic countries when it was inaugurated in 1547. Surrounding Stortorget are several centuries‑old buildings, including the Governor's Residence, Jørgen Kock's House, the Kramer Hotel, and the Lion Pharmacy – a 16th‑century pharmacy that still stands as one of Sweden’s few preserved cultural pharmacies. An equestrian statue of King Charles X Gustav, created in 1896, adds artistic flair to the middle of the square. Visitors to Stortorget can enjoy its lively atmosphere, historic architecture, and the calming presence of the adjacent meridian line, which passes right through the square. The area also serves as a convenient hub for tram and bus connections, making it easy to explore nearby attractions such as Lilla Torg, Gustav Adolfs torg, and the waterfront promenade on the Öresund.
