About

Storkyrkan, also known as Stockholm Cathedral or St. Nicholas Church, is the oldest and most historic church in Stockholm. Located in the heart of Gamla Stan, it was founded in the early 13th century and consecrated in 1306. The building blends a medieval Gothic hall‑church interior with a later Baroque façade, a tradition evident in its impressive rib‑vaulted nave, the silver altarpiece, the iconic statue of Saint George and the Dragon, and the rare Vädersolstavlan painting, which offers a colourful glimpse of 16th‑century Stockholm. Storkyrkan has been the backdrop for numerous royal ceremonies—including coronations, weddings, and state funerals—and today it remains an active parish while serving as a major cultural landmark. Visitors can enter the church free of charge and explore its historical treasures and tranquil ambience.
