Stortorget
About
Stortorget—meaning "the Grand Square"—is the historic heart of Stockholm’s old town, Gamla Stan. The square, founded in the Middle Ages, has grown from a medieval marketplace into a cultural landmark that still welcomes tens of thousands of visitors each year. Its rectangular, cobbled surface is surrounded by a procession of significant buildings: the grandiose Stock Exchange Building, home to the Nobel Museum and the Swedish Academy; the centrally‑located well, an 18th‑century feature that remains a focal point of the square; and the charming Christmas market that lights up Stortorget each winter with wooden stalls selling handcrafted gifts, Swedish delicacies, and holiday décor. The square’s serene ambience, combined with the tapestry of history and contemporary activity, makes Stortorget a must‑visit for anyone exploring Stockholm’s past and present.
