Vete-Katten
About
Vete‑Katten, literally “The Wheat Cat,” is a historic patisserie and coffee shop that first opened its doors on Stockholm’s bustling Kungsgatan in 1928. Today the café is a beloved hub for locals and tourists, offering a wide range of Swedish pastries, breads and classic coffee blends in a warm, smoke‑free setting. The original flagship shop on Kungsgatan 55 remains the heart of the operation, while additional branches across the city—at S:t Eriksgatan 41, Åhléns City, Central Station, Karolinska Medborgarhuset, Hotel Continental and the Gallerian—extend the brand’s reach. The menu at Vete‑Katten is a celebration of Scandinavian baking traditions, featuring everything from freshly baked rye bread and cinnamon buns to elegantly plated desserts like the famed princess cake and hearty sandwiches. Seasonal specials are highlighted each year, and the café prides itself on its house‑made coffee, which is brewed fresh in-house every day. Beyond its culinary offerings, Vete‑Katten is steeped in history: founded by Ester Nordhammar, later managed by the Brolins, and now owned by pastry chef Johan Sandelin, the café has been a test‑bed for Swedish baking innovation for nearly a century. The shop’s minimalist décor and friendly staff contribute to its reputation as a welcoming stop for coffee cravings, light bites, and leisurely afternoons. Whether you’re stopping for a quick morning fika, a leisurely lunch, or a sweet treat to take home, Vete‑Katten consistently delivers a cozy, authentically Swedish experience that honours its heritage while staying contemporary.
