Guitars The Museum
About
Guitars – the Museum in Umeå is a unique cultural landmark that celebrates the history of electric guitars, basses and related equipment. Housed in a historic brick building that once belonged to the Vasaskolan school, the museum opened in January 2014 as part of Umeå’s European Capital of Culture celebrations. The collection, assembled by brothers Mikael and Samuel Åhdén since the 1970s, boasts more than 500 vintage instruments from the 1950s and 1960s, including iconic models such as the 1958 Gibson Flying V, the 1960 Les Paul and the 1950 Fender Broadcaster. In addition to the permanent display, Guitars – the Museum hosts rotating temporary exhibitions that feature regional rock history, rare production models, and travelling displays. Visitors can explore hands‑on exhibits of amplifiers and accessories that contributed to the rise of electric guitar music, and learn about how this collection became the world’s largest of its kind. This museum is an essential stop for music lovers, curious families, and collectors alike, offering a deeper appreciation for the cultural impact of the electric guitar in a relaxed, family‑friendly environment.
