Tinguely Brunnen
About
The Tinguely Fountain, erected in 1977 on the former site of Basel’s old city theatre, is a dazzling kinetic sculpture park brought to life by the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. Ten mechanical figures—resembling dancers and acrobats—move in a choreographed dance within a shallow basin, offering a playful spectacle that is always slightly different yet recognizably the same. Gifted by the Migros Basel cooperative to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the fountain has become one of Basel’s iconic landmarks. Visitors can stroll around the fountain, watch the figures perform, and learn about Tinguely’s pioneering work in kinetic art. The site is free and open to the public; it closes for cleaning each Wednesday morning.
