Jet d'Eau
About
Jet d'Eau is Geneva’s most emblematic landmark, a soaring fountain that shoots water 140 m into the sky from the heart of Lake Geneva. First installed in 1886 and relocated to its present position in 1891, the jet is visible from almost any point in the city and even from the air, drawing millions of visitors each year. The fountain projects 5,000 litres of water per second, propelled by a pair of 500 kW pumps that draw power from the city’s electrical grid. This mechanical marvel showcases Geneva’s history of hydraulic engineering while delivering a stunning visual spectacle that has become a symbol of the city. The Tower operates daily year‑round, except during periods of frost or severe wind, and is illuminated each evening by 21 energy‑efficient bulbs from spring through autumn. The site is free to view and welcomes all visitors, from families taking a stroll along the quays to history buffs eager to learn about the fountain’s technical heritage.
