Brienz Rothorn Bahn
About
The Brienz Rothorn Railway is a historic 19th‑century steam‑powered rack railway that climbs from the lakeside town of Brienz to the summit of Brienzer Rothorn, the 2,351‑meter high peak of the Bernese Oberland. The 7.6‑kilometre line is the world’s oldest still‑operating steam mountain railway and offers travelers a unique glimpse of Swiss alpine heritage. The journey takes about an hour each way and is punctuated by the elegant steam locomotives that resist electrification, delighting enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. Once at the summit station, Rothorn Kulm, guests can dine in the historic Berghaus, stay overnight in cosy cabins, or enjoy hiking trails that wind through alpine meadows and rocky outcrops. The railway’s scenic views stretch to more than 600 peaks, providing one of the most dramatic panoramic experiences in the Swiss Alps. Operation runs from early May to late October, with day‑times service to the midway Planalp stop in the spring and to the full Rothorn Kulm summit in the summer months. During heavier weather or special maintenance, the line may be temporarily suspended. Tickets are available online and at the Brienz station, with optional seat guarantees that are highly recommended on busy days. The railway welcomes families with small children, budget‑conscious travelers, station‑based hikers, and history lovers. Whether you seek a unique experience on steam darning through the forest or an alpine dining experience at the summit, the Brienz Rothorn Railway promises a memorable journey that blends engineering, natural beauty, and Swiss heritage.
