About

Mount Rigi, affectionately called the "Queen of the Mountains," is a crown jewel of Central Switzerland’s Alpine foothills. Rising to 1,797 m (5,896 ft) on the border of the cantons of Schwyz and Lucerne, the mountain is almost entirely surrounded by the shimmering waters of Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz. Its gentle, stony ridges and sweeping grasslands have earned Rigi a place in Swiss folklore and an enduring reputation as a serene getaway for both thrill‑seekers and leisurely travellers. The mountain’s accessibility is a story of engineering marvels: Europe’s oldest rack railway, the Vitznau‑Rigi line, opened in 1871, and the neighbouring Arth‑Rigi railway was completed in 1875, allowing visitors to glide directly to the summit from either side of the lake. In the winter, a gondola lift connects Weggis to Rigi‑Kaltbad, while a cable‑car climbs from the Kräbel station to Rigi‑Scheidegg, offering panoramic periscopes to the alpine panorama. From the summit’s observatory terrace, panoramic vistas stretch 150 km (93 mi) across the Swiss Alps, a view that has inspired painters like J. M. W. Turner. When you descend the mountain’s well‑maintained walking trails, you’ll encounter cozy mountain chalets, historic spa facilities, and the Rigi Kulm Hotel—built in 1816—which today hosts a range of cultural events and high‑end accommodations. The area is also home to the mineral bath and spa designed by Mario Botta, adding a modern wellness touch to a landscape steeped in 19th‑century romance. Whether you’re summiting on a sunny day or hiking the forested paths in the fall, Rigi offers a blend of natural beauty, historic charm and contemporary comfort that remains irresistible to visitors of all ages.
