Lindenhof Hill
About
Lindenhof Hill is a historic moraine at the heart of Zürich, offering a panoramic vista of the Limmat river and the city’s rooftops. Buried beneath the green square are layers of history—from Celtic settlement to Roman fortifications and medieval castle ruins—that are still visible in the stone walls and foundations. Today the hill is a peaceful public square dotted with cafés, gardens, and the famous linden trees that give the place its name, and it is also the site of several historic stone tables that once hosted guild gatherings. Adjacent to the square lies the Rietberg Museum, one of Zürich’s leading museums of non‑European art. The site is recognized as a Swiss heritage property of national significance and is open to the public year‑round, free of charge. A typical visit can take 2–3 hours, allowing time to stroll through the square, admire the ancient Roman wall remnants, and enjoy the tranquil green spaces. The pleasant spring and early autumn months are especially lovely, when the linden trees are in bloom and the square hosts seasonal markets and cultural events.
