Castlerigg Stone Circle
About
Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of Britain’s oldest and most atmospheric megalithic sites, sits high on a moor overlooking the Lake District’s dramatic peaks. Constructed around 4,500 years ago in the late Neolithic period, the circle originally consisted of 38 standing stones set in a flattened, oval ring approximately 107 feet across. Today the site remains largely intact, with a clear view of the surrounding fells, and attracts thousands of visitors each year. The National Trust—managed by English Heritage—offers free entry on any reasonable daylight hours, with guidance for walk‑to‑site, parking and dog‑friendly access. A short walk from Keswick town centre takes roughly 30 minutes and the experience is ideal for families, history lovers and anyone who enjoys the combination of ancient mainland archaeology and breathtaking natural scenery.
