About

Lowther Castle & Gardens sits on a rocky limestone bluff overlooking the Bampton valley, a few miles south of Penrith in Cumbria. The original Jacobean mansion was built at the turn of the 19th century, and although the bulk of the house was demolished in 1957, the imposing façade and surrounding walls still stand, offering a dramatic backdrop to the sprawling gardens that have been lovingly restored and replanted over the last four decades. Visitors are greeted by a wide range of experiences – from wandering the historic ruins, through the meticulously designed gardens and woodland walkways, to the popular Adventure Playground (the Lost Castle), which offers a series of woodland play structures and large playhouses suitable for children of all ages. A café and takeaway in the courtyard provide freshly made food and refreshments. The site is family-friendly, welcoming dogs on leads, and provides free entry for children under 3 years of age, as well as for caring relatives. The castle opens daily from 10.00am to 4.00pm in winter and to 5.00pm in summer, and visitors are encouraged to book tickets online to ensure entry during peak periods.
