The Leas Lift
About
The Leas Lift in Folkestone, Kent, is a Grade II* listed historic funicular that once carried passengers between the seafront and the promenade. Built in 1885 and later extended with a second carriage in 1890, it was the only water‑balanced cliff lift on the UK coast. After closing in 2017, the lift has entered a £6.7 million restoration programme that has revived the original cars, waiting rooms, pumping mechanics and the entire track system. When it reopens in Spring 2026, visitors will be able to ride the refurbished carriage, explore interactive exhibitions that chronicle the lift’s storied past, and enjoy a new café and community space in the lower station. The site provides panoramic views of the coast and is expected to become a key cultural attraction and a symbol of local heritage that blends engineering ingenuity with community spirit.
