Cairngorm Reindeer Herd
About
Explore Scotland’s only free‑ranging herd of reindeer on the stunning Cairngorm mountains. Guided Hill Trips take visitors through rugged terrain for a 30‑to‑40 minute walk that brings you within a metre of the herd, offering up close encounters and on‑site lessons from experienced herders. On non‑Hill Trip days, the Paddocks and Exhibition keep the herd visible at the Glenmore visitor centre, while the festive "Christmas Fun" events showcase Santa and a small group of reindeer during the holiday season. The experience blends adventure with wildlife education – trekkers learn how to navigate rough ground safely, while families and older visitors enjoy interactive talks and photo opportunities. Seasonal weather means the best times to visit are from April to October, when temperatures are milder and the path is more accessible, though the Winter season offers the unique chance to see the herd in the snow. Tickets are available online up to 30 days in advance, with a small handling fee added at booking. Pre‑booking is highly recommended during peak periods to secure a spot.
