The Gobbins
About
The Gobbins is a dramatic, two‑mile‑long cliff‑face path that winds along the eastern coast of Islandmagee, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Built in 1902 by the visionary railway engineer Berkeley Deane Wise, the trail showcases a striking combination of engineered marvels—tubular bridges, suspension bridges, stone caves, and glass‑roofed galleries—set against a backdrop of rugged cliffs, crystal‑clear water, and rich birdlife. Today the path is restored and reopened in 2015, offering guided tours that take visitors from the Visitor Centre at Whitehead up to Wise’s Eye, where a 22‑metre long tunnel leads through the rocks. The experience is a three‑hour adventure that delivers spectacular seascapes, geology, and wildlife observation, all wrapped in a touring programme that celebrates the heritage of the original railway‑era project. Visitors arriving at the Visitor Centre find refreshments, restrooms, lockers and a dedicated safety induction. Guided tours depart on a shuttle bus from the centre, with the trail itself lasting roughly three hours and featuring 50 flights of stairs, a series of bridges, caves, and a viewpoint overlooking the Seven Sisters cliffs and the North Channel. The Gobbins remains open seasonal—from the first March to the first weekend of January—but the itinerary can be changed, and the site is currently subject to brief closures due to rockfall or storm damage. The Gobbins is a popular destination for families, history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure seekers alike, though its physically challenging terrain and occasional closures require planning and suitable fitness.
