Jane Austen's House
About
Jane Austen’s House Museum in Chawton, Hampshire, offers visitors a unique chance to step into the world of England’s beloved novelist. Set in the cottage where Austen wrote, revised and published her six major novels, the museum displays a rich collection of her personal belongings, including pottery, jewellery, first‑edition books and the famous writing table that witnessed her creative process. The House’s period rooms—Drawing Room, Dining Room and a cosy bedroom—have been carefully reconstructed to recreate the 19th‑century atmosphere, while temporary exhibitions explore Regency life and Austen’s influences. Visitors stroll through the beautifully preserved garden, a peaceful retreat that echoes Regency design, and can explore the surrounding village of Chawton, which inspired many of Austen’s settings. A well‑run gift shop offers a range of Austen‑themed books, souvenirs and local crafts. Annual tickets, including free admissions for children under six and seniors, allow unlimited visits for a whole year, encouraging repeat explorations of the House’s many facets. The museum welcomes guests year‑round from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, with last admission at 4:00 pm. During peak season—especially around Austen’s birthday in December—visitors are strongly advised to pre‑book.
