Watercress Line
About
The Watercress Line, officially known as the Mid‑Hants Railway, is a celebrated 10‑mile heritage line that winds through the picturesque hills of Hampshire, from Alresford to Alton. The line, once a vital route for watercress transport to London, now offers a nostalgic steam‑train experience for visitors of all ages. Passengers hop onto beautifully restored steam locomotives and lovingly maintained rolling stock, watching the countryside glow with the soft light of the South Downs. Along the route, four historic stations—Alresford, Ropley, Medstead & Four Marks, and Alton—provide a living museum of railway life. Alresford hosts a visitor centre with a museum and refreshments, while Ropley serves as the technical heart of the line, where engines are serviced. The highest point at Medstead & Four Marks offers panoramic views, and Alton connects to the national rail network, making the journey a blend of heritage and convenience. The line also hosts a range of seasonal specials: steam illuminations, themed “Day Out With Thomas”, wizard‑week adventures for children, and immersive 1940s‑era wartime experiences. Children aged four and under ride for free on the standard service, and adult fares are modest, with family‑friendly group tickets available. The Watercress Line delivers a charming, family‑oriented railway adventure that invites both history lovers and train enthusiasts alike.
