About

Caen Hill Locks, located in Devizes, Wiltshire, is one of the most dramatic and iconic lock flights on the UK’s inland waterways. With 29 locks rising 237 feet over just two miles, it is the steepest continuous lock flight in Britain and a scheduled ancient monument. The locks attract boaters, walkers and history enthusiasts with their impressive engineering and the scenic towpath that runs the full length of the flight. The surrounding Diamond Jubilee Wood adds a tranquil woodland backdrop, creating an ideal setting for leisurely walks or picnics. Visitors can board the free “Admiral Welcome Boat” at Lock 44 for a brief history lesson, or simply follow the towpath to appreciate the lock stairways and the picturesque Wiltshire countryside. While the lock flight itself is free to access, a day parking fee of £4 is available at the Canal & River Trust car park on Rowde. Caen Hill is best enjoyed in late spring or early summer when the weather is mild and crowds are lighter. Whether arriving by narrowboat, car, or on foot, the climb up the flight offers a rewarding mix of heritage, nature, and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
