About

The Big Fish is a striking 10‑metre long ceramic mosaic sculpture situated on Donegall Quay in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Created by artist John Kindness and unveiled in 1999, the fish’s shell is covered in ceramic tiles that showcase a colourful collage of Belfast history – from Tudor‑era headlines to contemporary news, all stitched together by local schoolchildren and community groups. Hidden within the fish’s belly is a time‑capsule containing photographs, poems and other artefacts that chronicle the city’s past, making the sculpture both a visual landmark and a living museum. Visitors can break ground on the riverfront and admire the artwork at any time, as the sculpture stands free‑to‑view 24 / 7 along the waterfront.
