Mount Stewart
About
Mount Stewart is a Neo‑classical house and world‑class garden that welcomes visitors to its enchanting landscape on the east shore of Strangford Lough, just outside Newtownards. The house, once home to the illustrious Londonderry family, houses a remarkable collection of paintings, furniture and antiquities that showcase the family’s cultural legacy. Surrounding the house is a 98‑acre estate that features formal gardens, woodland walks, a natural play area, and the iconic Temple of the Winds, a neo‑Greek building offering panoramic views of the lough. The estate’s gardens are famous worldwide for their beauty and diversity. From formal rose beds and shaded paths to wildflower meadows and the dramatic Temple of the Winds, each area offers a distinct experience. The walking trails – which total more than ten miles – weave through woodland, farmland and dunes, making the estate a true outdoor sanctuary. Visitors can explore the house, the gardens, and participate in seasonal events such as the Christmas Trail or summer sculpture exhibitions. Activities range from guided tours and tea‑room refreshments to family‑friendly play spaces. The visitor centre offers a bookshop, plant sales, and rich interpretive information on the site’s history and ecology.
