About

Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve is a 3,541‑hectare (8,750‑acre) coastal wilderness on the Northumberland coast, part of the historic Holy Island (Lindisfarne). The reserve protects a mosaic of habitats – sandy dunes, saltmarshes, intertidal mudflats, rocky shores and wet mires – that support more than 330 bird species each year, including the unique worldwide wintering population of brent geese. For visitors the reserve offers spacious salt‑marsh trails, dune walks, and an iconic tidal causeway that connects to the historic island, giving dramatic views of the North Sea. Birds of prey such as buzzards and red kites often glide overhead, while the dunes blossom with wildflowers in spring. Visitor facilities, including a visitor centre, free walking paths and clear signage, make the reserve accessible to all ages, while the natural heritage is safeguarded by Natural England and the National Trust. Whether you’re a bird‑watching enthusiast, a history buff exploring the ruins of Lindisfarne Abbey, or simply looking for a peaceful walk across the tidal flats, the reserve offers a tranquil escape from everyday life. Guided walks are available, and a volunteer programme welcomes nearby groups to support habitat management. The reserve is open year‑round but access to the island itself depends on tide times; low tide reveals the causeway and the expansive mudflats, creating a unique walking experience in the early morning or late afternoon.
