About

Southport Botanic Gardens is a celebrated green space nestled in the suburb of Churchtown, Southport, Merseyside, England. Commonly known as “The Jewel in the Crown,” it draws visitors with its vivid floral displays that have been featured on BBC’s Gardener’s World and its historic charm. Established in 1874 by a local group of working men, the Gardens were built on land acquired from the Hesketh Estate. The original site opened in 1875 and, by 1876, the Botanic Gardens Museum had been added to showcase natural history artifacts, including a collection of dolls, a Victorian room, and the remarkable Martin Mere canoe. Although the museum closed in 2011, its artifacts now reside in the neighbouring Atkinson Museum. Today the park remains open all year round, offering a tranquil escape with a lake, fernery, and beautifully landscaped flowerbeds. Seasonal gardens change throughout the year, keeping the scenery fresh and inviting. The gardens’ history still echoes in the remaining conservatory outline and the fernery at its heart. Whether exploring the lake, strolling along the curated flower paths, or visiting the museum‑converted building, Southport Botanic Gardens delivers a blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and family‑friendly leisure that makes it a must‑visit destination in Merseyside.
