The Jane Austen Centre
About
The Jane Austen Centre, housed in a charming Georgian townhouse at 40 Gay Street, Bath, invites visitors to step into the world of Austen’s Regency era. The museum offers a curated journey through the author’s life, her novels, and the social milieu that shaped her work. Costumed actors break the fourth wall with engaging stories, guiding guests through interactive displays and reenacting scenes from the novels. A highlight of the Centre is the life‑size waxwork of Emily Bennet, which has become a beloved landmark for fans. Visitors can pose for photographs, indulge in playful Regency dress‑up, and even try their hand at quill‑pen writing. The interactive exhibition area combines audio‑visual installations with hands‑on exhibits, ensuring families and history enthusiasts alike remain captivated. On the second floor, the Regency Tea Room transports guests to a quintessential afternoon tea experience. With 17 varieties of leafed tea and a selection of locally baked cakes, the tea room offers a delicious backdrop to the literary exploration. Admissions are available year‑round; pre‑booking is highly recommended—especially during the busy August–September season, as the final entry is one hour before closing. The Centre remains open daily with extended hours in summer (9:45 am–6:00 pm) and slightly reduced winter hours (10:00 am–4:30 pm).
