National Museum Cardiff, located in the heart of Cardiff’s elegant civic centre on Cathays Park, is Wales’s national museum of art, geology, and natural history. With a permanent collection spanning five hundred years of art, it houses one of Europe’s finest Impressionist selections, along with works by Welsh masters such as Gwen John and John Hughes. The museum also offers an extraordinary journey through the Evolution of Wales, a 4,600‑million‑year narrative that brings dinosaurs, the Bizarre and Woolly mammoths to life, while the natural history galleries showcase Wales’s diverse ecosystems and 900 special scientific sites. Admission is free, though some temporary exhibitions, events, and activities may require a separate entry fee. Visitors can plan a visit between 10 am and 4 pm, with galleries closing at 3:45 pm, and the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Mondays but open for bank holiday Mondays.
