About

Geddington Church – originally dedicated to St. Andrew – dates from the mid-10th Century, when the manor was held by Edith, Queen to Edward the Confessor. The north and south aisles were added in the 12th and 13th Centuries and a royal palace lay just north of the church. The monks of Pipewell Abbey had charge of between 1357 and 1538, and the structure was substantially completed during this time. Dating from the mid14th Century, our reredos (an artwork behind the altar) was renovated by Sir Ninian Comper in 1888-89 with 13 exquisitely-painted panels. His work replaced an earlier scheme by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Comper was the last of the great ‘gothic revival’’ architects and over nearly 70 years he created several superb artworks here, including the Great East Window (1892), the choir stalls (1912) and the Lady Chapel Window (1957). Free guided tours of the church, either for yourself or an organised group, are available to book via our website.
