Falkirk Wheel
About
The Falkirk Wheel is a world‑renowned engineering marvel that serves as a rotating boat lift, connecting the Forth & Clyde Canal to the Union Canal in a dramatic half‑turn that takes just five minutes. Designed by RMJM in collaboration with engineers from Arup and Butterley, the wheel raises boats by 24 metres while keeping the system perfectly balanced. Completed in 2002 as part of the Millennium Link project, it revitalised a derelict canal corridor and became Scotland’s flagship destination for waterway tourism. The visitor centre, situated in a modern glass‑roofed building beside the wheel, offers interactive exhibits, a café, a gift shop and full accessibility for wheelchair users. During the summer months, the wheel operates a frequent boat‑trip schedule, with tickets available on the day and online booking for those who prefer to secure a seat in advance. The attraction also welcomes dogs and motorhomes, providing dedicated parking and amenities for all visitors. Beyond its mechanical intrigue, the Falkirk Wheel has become a hub for events, ranging from corporate meetings to community celebrations, further cementing its role as a cultural landmark.
