About
Pevensey Castle, founded by the Romans in around AD 290, is the largest of the Saxon Shore forts and sits on a promontory overlooking the now-silted Pevensey Bay. Over the centuries it has seen a succession of occupants—from a Roman auxiliary fort to a Norman stronghold used during the 1066 invasion, and most recently as a second‑world‑war defence point. Today the castle’s imposing Roman curtain walls, the Norman keep and the inner bailey form a remarkable tangle of history that attracts visitors eager to step back in time.
