National Galleries Scotland: Modern One
About
National Galleries Scotland: Modern welcomes visitors to Edinburgh’s contemporary art scene in two striking gallery buildings on Belford Road. Since its re‑branding in 2012, the site holds an international collection of more than 6,000 paintings, sculptures, installations and prints that span from the early twentieth century to the present, featuring masters such as Picasso, Matisse, Hockney and Warhol, as well as celebrated Scottish artists. The galleries host a rotating programme of exhibitions alongside a permanent collection that includes a curated program of modern Scottish art and an impressive array of post‑war works. Visitors can explore the longtime works of Francis Bacon, David Hockney, and the Turner‑landscaping legacy of the National Galleries. Beyond the indoor spaces, Modern offers a landscaped sculpture garden and the award‑winning Landform design by Charles Jencks, which frames the front of the buildings. The outdoor area includes more than 60 sculptures by contemporary artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, George Rickey, and Heather Hepworth, creating a dynamic interaction between art and nature. The free admission welcomes all visitors, and the flowing layout encourages leisurely exploration of both inside and outside displays.
