Royal Mile
About
The Royal Mile is the historic main thoroughfare of Edinburgh’s Old Town, stretching approximately 1.6 kilometres from Edinburgh Castle in the north to Holyrood Palace in the south. The street is a labyrinth of narrow lanes, arcades and close‑quarters that house a diverse range of shops, restaurants, pubs, museums and cultural landmarks. Visitors can wander through the Castle Esplanade and Castlehill, past the iconic St Giles’ Cathedral and the heart‑shaped “Heart of Midlothian” at the corner of St Giles, before arriving at the east end where the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Scottish Parliament building stand. During the annual Edinburgh Fringe, the High Street becomes a bustling platform for street performers and crowds, making it the city’s most popular tourist street. The Royal Mile offers a vivid glimpse into Scotland’s royal history, architectural heritage and contemporary street life, making it a must‑visit destination for history enthusiasts, foodies and families alike.
