Glenfarclas Distillery
About
Glenfarclas Distillery, nestled in the heart of Ballindalloch in Scotland’s Speyside region, is a storied independent whisky producer that traces its roots back to 1836 when it was first licensed under Robert Hay. The distillery has remained in the hands of the Grant family since 1865, and today it continues to craft whisky using traditional Highland barley, the distinctive sherry influence, and six of the largest stills in Speyside. The distillery’s visitor centre, opened in 1973, invites whisky enthusiasts to explore the history of the distillery, taste a range of its single‑malt expressions, and wander through the ship‑room, which is lined with paneling salvaged from the RMS *Empress of Australia*. Visitors can learn about the distillation process, view the iconic copper stills, and sample Glenfarclas’ acclaimed range of 8‑year‑old to 30‑year‑old single malts, as well as limited‑edition releases such as the “Family Reserve” and the 60‑year‑old bottling. While the distillery’s manufacturing operations continue year‑round, the visitor centre is open on weekdays throughout the year and on Saturdays from July to September, allowing day‑time tours and tastings to the public. Though the facility does not require a reservation, visitors are encouraged to arrive early to experience the distillery’s intimate atmosphere and to explore its galleries, which house rare bottlings and historic memorabilia. Glenfarclas has earned international acclaim, being named Distiller of the Year by Whisky Magazine on multiple occasions and receiving accolades such as the Scotch Whisky Single Malt of the Year honour. The distillery’s commitment to quality, heritage, and hospitality has made it a must‑visit destination for whisky lovers and cultural tourists alike, offering an immersive journey into the world of Speyside whisky production.
