About

Beer Quarry Caves, situated a mile west of the village of Beer in Devon, is a staggering underground network that bears 2,000 years of human history and quarrying heritage. The caves were excavated gradually from Roman times, through the Middle Ages and into the 20th century, producing the famed Beer stone that has adorned monuments such as Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London. Today visitors follow guided tours through the masterful vaulted chambers, half‑every hour from 10:30 a.m. on opening days, and learn how the stone was cut by candlelight and transported by wheelbarrow and river barges. The walk is not only a journey underground, but a lesson in geology, craftsmanship and preservation – a testament to the skill of the stone masons and the timeless beauty of the chalk limestone. The cave system is a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest and a renowned bat roost. During the winter months the chamber walls host hibernating Greater and Lesser Horseshoe bats, while in summer the caves offer a rare glimpse of their nightly flights. “Free stone” characteristics of the Beer stone allow each block to be cut in any direction, producing the smooth, creamy finish that made it a favourite for delicate carvings. Whether you’re a history buff, a family looking for a unique outing, or simply a curious traveller, the Beer Quarry Caves deliver a compelling mix of natural wonder, cultural heritage and a touch of the supernatural – and all that for a modest adult fare of £13, with concessions and family packages available. Book in advance to secure your spot, and experience one of England’s most extraordinary subterranean attractions.
