About

St Mawes Castle, a striking example of Henry VIII’s coastal defences, sits on the western tip of the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall. Built in 1542 to guard the anchorage of Carrick Roads, the fortress rises in the distinctive clover‑leaf shape and is crowned with a tower that has long offered sweeping views of the sea and passing ships. Inside, visitors can explore the gun platform and bastions, the tower, and the battlements that were once a deterrent to any would‑be invaders. The castle is a popular stop for families and history enthusiasts alike, with hands‑on activities, historical displays and a collection of 15 historically significant guns and cannons that have been recently restored. The site is free‑entry for members and families with children – up to six children can enjoy the castle for free when accompanied by an adult member – and guidebooks are available for purchase at the on‑site shop. Please note that St Mawes Castle is currently closed to the public and will reopen in March 2026. Until then, visitors are welcome to enjoy the ferry from St Mawes to Falmouth, but no interior access will be possible. Check the official English Heritage website for updates on opening times, pricing and group visit arrangements.
