Swanpool Beach
About
Swanpool Beach is a pristine coastal lagoon on Cornwall’s sunny south coast, tucked between the towns of Maenporth and Gyllyngvase. Designated as a Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, the lagoon’s brackish waters nurture a rare salt‑mat community of bryozoans and support resident wildfowl such as voles, swans and duck species. The shoreline is fringed by a shingle bar that gives way to a sandy beach, making it an ideal spot for kayaking, paddle‑boarding and coasteering in the calm waters of Falmouth Bay. The beach is also a popular stop on the South West Coast Path, allowing visitors to enjoy scenic coastal walks with spectacular rock formations and panoramic sea views. While the beach is open year‑round, dogs are restricted between Easter and 1 October, and cars are charged for parking during the summer months. The natural charm of Swanpool is enhanced by its adjacent Swanvale Nature Reserve, managed by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. The reserve offers willow carr habitats that shelter a variety of small birds and mammals, making it an attractive destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Together, the lagoon and reserve provide a tapestry of wetland and terrestrial ecosystems, offering visitors a blend of water‑based recreation and quiet woodland walks. Whether you’re seeking a family day out, a gentle paddle‑boarding session, or a moment of tranquillity amid emblematic Cornish scenery, Swanpool delivers a memorable coastal experience without the need for costly admissions or reservations.
