The Lighthouse
About
The Lighthouse, located on 11 Mitchell Lane in Glasgow, is Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture and a flagship visitor centre within the city’s Style Mile. Opened in 1999 as part of Glasgow’s designation as the UK City of Architecture and Design, it occupies the historic former offices of the Glasgow Herald, a building designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1895. The Lighthouse offers dynamic exhibitions that explore the intersections of contemporary design, architecture, and the creative industries, as well as a permanent Mackintosh exhibition with insights into the architect’s life and work. Visitors can climb the iconic Mackintosh Tower for panoramic views of the city, or take the lift to a modern south‑side viewing platform, both accessible via a helical staircase. The on‑site shop TOJO showcases the latest designer products, and the Doocot café/bar provides a relaxed spot to unwind after a day of exploration.
