Skipton Castle Woods
About
Skipton Castle Woods is a rare 36‑acre ancient woodland tucked behind the medieval castle in the heart of Skipton, North Yorkshire. The woodland offers free, 24‑hour access all year round, with a variety of walking routes designed for all fitness levels – from the gentle River Valley Route (yellow) to the moderate Upper Paths Extension (blue) and the brisk Earl of Thanet Trail (red). A network of well‑marked paths, bridges, and stepping stones leads visitors through a habitat teeming with wildlife, providing excellent opportunities to spot kingfishers, herons, bats, and a host of songbirds. The site also features a 360° virtual tour, making it easy to explore the wood’s highlights from the comfort of your computer. Families and nature enthusiasts alike will find a wealth of activities, including guided walks, wildlife spotting, and community events such as Easter Eggventures and bat walks. The woodland is free to enter, making it an ideal destination for a relaxed afternoon outdoors. The main entrances are the Old Sawmill (the most visitor‑friendly), the Bailey entrance (off Skipton Castle car park), and the Short Lee Lane entrance, each offering easy access for pedestrians, cyclists and dogs. With a rich history spanning a thousand years, the woods have been home to diverse tree species – oak, birch, ash, yew, Scots pine and more – while providing a sanctuary for wildlife and a green escape for local residents and tourists alike.
