Holehird Gardens
About
Join us at Holehird Gardens, a 12‑acre Lakeland oasis that lies on the slopes of Windermere. This volunteer‑run haven boasts a stunning collection of plant species, including six National Plant Collections featuring Astilbe, Daboecia, Meconopsis, Polystichum, Hydrangea and Hosta. The gardens’ layout—spanning a Walled Garden, Upper and Lower gardens, glasshouses and a Lake‑side terrace—offers a diverse array of landscapes for every season. Visitors are welcomed daily from dawn to dusk, with free entry supported by a recommended donation of £6 for adults and free admission for children. The garden’s friendly volunteers staff a Visitor Information centre from 10:00 to 16:00, providing maps, leaflets and tea, as well as guided walks on Wednesdays during peak season. Whispering fells, crystal‑clear water and historic flower beds create a sensory feast for nature lovers and families alike. With wheelchair‑friendly paths, a disabled toilet, and year‑round temperature‑controlled displays, Holehird Gardens caters to all, while its early‑morning and late‑afternoon openings allow for a relaxed visit. While facilities are limited, the tranquil setting and expansive plant collections make an afternoon in these gardens unforgettable.
