RSPB Leighton Moss Nature Reserve
About
Leighton Moss RSPB Nature Reserve, perched on the edge of Morecambe Bay in Lancashire, is the largest reedbed wetland in north‑west England. Designated as a Ramsar site, SSSI and Special Protection Area, its expansive shallow waters provide an indispensable breeding ground for rare birds such as bitterns, marsh harriers and bearded tits. Visitors are treated to a range of wildlife experiences: from the well‑maintained observation hides – including the iconic Eric Morecambe hide – to the 9‑metre‑high Skytower which offers panoramic views over the marshes. The reserve is year‑round, opening daily from 9 am to dusk (approximately 6 pm) with a visitor centre that operates 9:30 am to 5 pm (4:30 pm in November–January). The centre houses a café, a gift shop, an education room and a range of guided walks and events. RSPB members enjoy free entry, while a half‑price pass is available for visitors arriving by public transport, bicycle or on foot. The site welcomes families, bird‑watching enthusiasts, nature lovers and educational groups, providing interactive exhibits, nature trails and regular wildlife–watching activities for all ages.
