Shipley Glen Tramway
About
The Shipley Glen Tramway is a preserved cable funicular that has delighted visitors since its opening on 18 May 1895. Nestled in the wooded countryside of Shipley Glen, West Yorkshire, it is the oldest working cable tramway in the United Kingdom, offering a charming glimpse into Victorian engineering and transport history. Stretching 440 yards (400 m) up a steep 1 in 7 (14.29 %) gradient, the two‑car system climbs at 7.5 mph (12.1 km/h) before gently descending back to the lower terminus. After a temporary closure in 2010 for safety upgrades, the line was fully modernised and reopened in 2011 under the stewardship of a volunteer‑run charitable trust. Today the tramway operates on volunteer crews and is powered by a modern electric drive, ensuring a smooth, scenic ride between the two termini. Visitors enjoy a daily two‑hour window from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The ride offers panoramic views of the surrounding woodland, crisp air, and a sense of stepping back in time. Families, history buffs, and photography enthusiasts alike find the gentle ascent and descent a perfect, family‑friendly attraction that showcases local heritage while providing a unique, low‑impact travel experience.
