Antony Gormley's Another Place
About
Another Place is a striking contemporary sculpture by Sir Antony Gormley located on Crosby Beach in Merseyside, England. The installation consists of 100 life‑sized cast‑iron figures that span a 2‑mile (3.2 km) stretch of the coast between Waterloo and Blundellsands. Each figure stands 1.89 m tall and weighs roughly 650 kg, modeled directly on the artist’s own body. As the tide recedes the figures rise from the sand, and when the tide comes in they become submerged, creating a dramatic tide‑dependent visual experience. The work was first unveiled on the beach of Cuxhaven in 1997 and has been the subject of controversy and acclaim alike; after securing permission from Sefton Council in 2007 it remains permanently installed. As a freely accessible outdoor attraction, visitors are encouraged to arrive during low tide to fully appreciate the artwork’s scale and seaside setting.
