The World of Glass
About
The World of Glass, located in the heart of St Helens, is a living heritage museum that celebrates the town’s illustrious glass‑making history. Visitors wander through a Victorian street‑level gallery, explore the origins of glass in the dedicated Glass Gallery, and step back in time in the Past Gallery to see Victorian life in all its detail. One of the museum’s signature attractions is the live glass‑blowing studio where expert artisans craft molten glass into stunning shapes in front of an audience. The Tank House – a Grade 2 listed site where the Pilkington family perfected continuous glass manufacture – offers a tangible link to the industry’s roots. Complementing these core galleries is the Holford Collection, a contemporary showcase of internationally renowned glass artists. With free entry to the museum and Tank House, and only modest fees for the demo sessions, the World of Glass delivers an engaging, immersive experience for all ages. A visit typically takes around three hours, allowing guests to enjoy the tours, demonstrations and interactive displays at a relaxed pace. The museum’s open hours run from 10 am to 4 pm daily, with occasional adjustments for bank holidays and special events. Recommended season: Late spring and early autumn offer mild weather and fewer crowds, ideal for a relaxed visit.
