The Comedy Store
About
The Comedy Store London, located on 1a Oxendon Street in Soho’s vibrant West End, opened its doors in 1979 and has since become a cornerstone of the UK’s comedy scene. It was founded by insurance salesman Peter Rosengard, inspired by the Los Angeles Comedy Store, and quickly grew from a small open‑mic room into a world‑famous venue that launched the careers of icons such as Paul Merton, Ben Elton, Rik Mayall, and the late Charlie Hinde. The club’s two‑floor layout provides a cosy auditorium for headline acts and a dining area for guests to enjoy pizza, drinks, and fresh‑baked pastries before or during shows. Today, the club presents a diverse slate of performances, ranging from the monthly improv troupe The Comedy Store Players to world‑renowned stand‑up specials. The “King Gong” open‑mic night, held every last Monday of the month, is a fan‑favourite that attracts both emerging talent and seasoned comic veterans. Nearby cafés and bars complement the lively atmosphere, and the club’s long‑standing commitment to nurturing new performers is reflected in its Beginners Comedy Course, which offers an intensive two‑week training program for aspiring comedians. Whether you’re a long‑time resident or a first‑time visitor, the Comedy Store’s blend of history, humor, and community makes it a must‑visit spot in London’s comedy landscape.
