About

The Tutankhamun: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh exhibition opened in London’s Saatchi Gallery on 2 November 2019 as part of a partnership between the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, IMG Exhibitions, and Viking Cruises. The temporary display featured more than 150 original artefacts taken directly from the tomb of King Tutankhamun – including gold jewellery, painted wooden coffins, ceremonial masks and a priceless gold death mask – and 60 of those objects were on loan from Egypt for the first and last time before they were returned for permanent display at the Grand Egyptian Museum. The show ran until 20 March 2020, when it closed early because of the COVID‑19 pandemic and the artefacts were returned to Egypt. The Saatchi Gallery presentation was part of a long tradition of touring exhibitions of Tutankhamun’s treasures that began with the first traveling show in 1972 at the British Museum. Since then, the collection has travelled to institutions around the world, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.) and the Louvre (Paris), and more recently to the California Science Center, Paris’ Palais de la Villette, and the Sydney Museum. Each tour has highlighted the splendour of Egypt’s 18th‑Dynasty regalia and brought the mystery of King Tutankhamun’s burial to audiences worldwide. Visitors at the Saatchi Gallery were treated to the full spectrum of Tutankhamun’s legacy, from his ornate funeral regalia to everyday household items, providing a unique glimpse into the life and death of one of history’s most famous pharaohs. This exhibition remains a must‑see for anyone interested in ancient Egyptian culture, art history, or the extraordinary archaeological provenance of King Tut’s tomb. The free‑to‑visit nature of the Saatchi Gallery means that anyone can experience these treasures, but due to high demand visitors are encouraged to book timed‑entry tickets in advance where available.
