Hippodrome Circus
About
The Great Yarmouth Hippodrome is a historic circus theatre that dates back to 1903, making it one of only a handful of purpose‑built permanent circuses in the world. Designed by architect Ralph Scott Cockrill and built by showman George Gilbert, the building boasts a striking Art Nouveau façade, a circular ring and an iconic sinking‑ring feature that fills with water when a performance ends. It has been a Grade II* listed building since 1978 and has survived the transition from a traditional circus venue to a multi‑use space. Today the Hippodrome is owned and operated by the Jay family, who continue to produce the annual Circus Spectaculars four times a year. Each show includes a blend of magical acts, acrobatics, and live music, drawing families and circus lovers from across the UK and beyond. In addition to its circus programming, the venue has hosted wrestling events and other touring shows, cementing its status as a lively cultural hub in Great Yarmouth. The theatre’s blend of historic architecture, immersive entertainment and community‑driven programming makes it a must‑visit destination for anyone interested in the magic of circus arts or the heritage of early‑20th‑century performance spaces.
