Imperial War Museum North
About
Imperial War Museum North (IWM North) is a flagship branch of the Imperial War Museum, situated on Trafford Wharf Road in Stretford, Greater Manchester. Designed by Daniel Libeskind, the striking deconstructivist building overlooks the Manchester Ship Canal and offers panoramic canal views from its air‑shard tower. Entry to the museum is entirely free, making it an accessible destination for all visitors. The museum presents a continuous chronological narrative of warfare, from the First World War to the present day, housed mainly in the earth shard’s expansive main gallery. Visitors will encounter iconic artifacts such as a T‑34 tank, an Avro Lancaster, and a 13‑pounder field‑gun, as well as immersive audio‑visual presentations known as the Big Picture. The water shard contains a café with canal views, while the air‑shard offers a dramatic entrance and viewing deck. IWM North also hosts rotating temporary exhibitions, educational programs, guided tours, and interactive displays, making it a dynamic and engaging destination for families, history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, students, and solo travelers alike.
