Saltburn Cliff Tramway
About
The Saltburn Cliff Tramway, also known as the Saltburn Cliff Lift, is the world’s oldest water‑balanced funicular, having opened in 1884. It connects the Victorian seaside town of Saltburn with the historic pleasure pier along the North Sea coast, offering a gentle, scenic ascent and descent that presents panoramic views of the town and the pier. Open daily from mid‑April to mid‑December, the tramway operates between 10:30 am and 5:00 or 6:00 pm depending on the season, with slightly shorter hours in the winter months. The route is fully accessible, with staff on hand to help visitors with mobility needs, making it a popular choice for families and history enthusiasts alike. Tickets are sold on site and come in a variety of options—including adult, child, family, dog and bicycle fares—as well as annual memberships. While a reservation is not mandatory, booking in advance (by email or phone) is recommended during peak periods to secure a spot. The lower promenade, the adjacent pier, and the cliff itself provide a beautiful backdrop for a relaxing day out.
