The colourful formal displays complement the steep grassy banks which are cut to support a rich diversity of wild flowers. Summer sees the miniature railway bringing people up from the sea to the gardens, Woodland Centre and Woodsend Tearooms and the valley plays host to theatre events, festivals and guided walks. A permanent orienteering course helps people of all abilities explore the gardens.
