About

Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, a venerable institution on Burdon Road, celebrates the region’s rich industrial heritage, natural sciences, and artistic achievements since its 1846 opening. The museum’s extensive collections include the UK’s only known gliding reptile specimen, a celebrated collection of Sunderland Lustreware pottery, and a diverse array of Victorian and Edwardian-era artefacts. Adjacent to the museum, the elegantly restored Winter Gardens showcase more than 2,000 flowering plants, trees and shrubs, offering a fragrant, multicolour oasis that comes alive with seasonal displays and seasonal events. Visitors can explore a range of interactive galleries – from the enigmatic Old World fossil chambers to contemporary showcases that feature rotating exhibits such as “Going Back Brockens: Monuments and Rhetoric After the Miners’ Strike.” The museum welcomes visitors of all ages with free admission, supplemented by limited fee‑based special exhibitions and family‑focused workshops. Guided tours, community events, and educational programmes for schools are regularly staged across all four floors of the building. The museum is open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm (Monday 3 Nov 2025 the Winter Gardens close at 4 pm), and closed on Sundays. With its free entry, visitor-friendly environment, and inspiring displays, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens provides a memorable experience for families, history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
